Saturday

The major objective for the weekend was the recording of a how-to video on the M1, a 1949-built Fairmont S-2 motor car. Bill Ward is the chief caretaker of the M1. He did all of the restoration work and then figured out how to run the thing. It's not as easy as it might look and definitely requires a how-to video for safe operations.

Steve Benson and Jason Rose were Bill's 8th and 9th students to go through the training course. Bill did a fantastic job. His knowledge and understanding of the S-2 is unsurpassed and he's an excellent instructor.

Sunday

Everett & Jason took the M1 out so Jason could get some more practice and to record some line-side video to beef up the footage for the instructional video.

The other half of the morning was spent shuffling everything around in the Engine House to make it easier to get is needed for regular operations when the SFHM opens in a few weeks. While doing that, we noticed that Switch #10 (leading to Engine House Track #2) was very rough. A quick investigation showed it was a 1.5" out of gauge. So, we stopped switching and tightened the gauge rod at the switch. After that it was smooth as glass.

We were done by 1100 and hit the road for home.

A beautiful, cold, crisp Sunday morning in Long Leaf.

Everett & Jason took M1 out for some video and spent an hour re-arranging the equipment in the Engine House.

After some nifty 0-5-0 switching, we got the 2nd work trailer behind M2 and Everett backed the train into the Engine House.

Track #2 is clear except for the passenger trailer.

M1 parks with the passenger trailer.

While moving things around, Everett noticed that Switch #10 (which leads to Engine House Track #2) was rough.

A quick investigation showed it 1.5" out of gauge. So, we stopped for a bit and adjusted a gauge bar to square things up.

When Everett back M4 over the switch a bit later, he reported it was smooth as glass.

Mission Accomplished. Weekend Concluded.
